In Every Time I Feel the Spirit, Rev. Shannon brings many lesser known historical women of color and obscured Biblical women from the margins to the center using their narratives to advocate a Womanist theology of hope and radical self-love. She brilliantly synthesizes biblical scholarship and historiography with their lived experiences to amplify God’s transformative power to enliven Spirit to move, heal, and foster wholeness amid oppression and despair.Rev. Dr. Irie Lynne Session, co-pastor of The Gathering, A Womanist Church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and CEO of I.L.Session Ministries, Inc.
This wonderful, multi-dimensional, seductive text is hard to put down. Shannon Dycus’ lively voice and intrepid imagination encourages us to read scripture in a new way – weaving biblical stories with later heroines of the spirit – mystics, freedom fighters, and poets. We are invited to join the chorus and pray and sing our way more deeply into the life of the Spirit. This book will stay with me a long time.Dr. Wendy Farley, director of program in Christian Spirituatlity, San Francisco Theological Seminary
With breath prayers, insightful commentary and reflection prompts, Pastor Shannon Dycus’ Every Time I Feel the Spirit is a powerful Bible study guide of inspiration and encouragement. Pastor Dycus engages the reader in biblical and contemporary stories of courageous women (some unnamed and some heretofore unknown) often at the margins and mercy of oppressive structures. Their lives of faithfulness and dependence upon God’s provision in an otherwise uncaring world convey a grounded assurance they are not unknown but divinely loved. Pastor Dycus notes, “The power they access is also within you.” Whether used for group or individual study, the reader will emerge empowered by the wisdom Pastor Dycus seamlessly weaves throughout the guide.Jennifer Delanty, Dove's Nest Board of Directors and Incoming chair of Spiritual Leadership team at Seattle Mennonite Church
Pastor Shannon has raised up as a witness many of the faithful women of the Bible and Christian history as an inspiration for us today. She rightly notes that the same Holy Spirit at work in their lives is available to us today. Her biblical insights are provocative, and her sense of history is truly inspiring. Bible studies—not just those for women—will find her book truly transformative.Dr. Scott Seay, archivist, pastor and associate professor of the History of Christianity at Christian Theological Seminary
This is the devotional Bible study my soul has been craving! Every Time I Feel the Spirit is holy work. It invokes the Holy Spirit with each lesson exploring the parallels between women activist and biblical figures. While reading I felt well-loved and challenged by the historical figures presented, the interpretation of scripture and Rev. Dycus’ study questions and, maybe most importantly, it helped me breathe. I am excited about buying this as a gift for many people and returning to it repeatedly for myself.Chesla T. Nickelson, program director and merger staff at Disciples women
